Pharmacy in Malaysia

Malaysia is a diverse and dynamic country of 34.2 million people, with healthcare needs increasingly shaped by an ageing population and the rising burden of chronic disease. These shifts are driving greater demand for accessible, high-quality, and patient-centred care, and creating more space for pharmacists to play a larger role in improving health outcomes.

Located at the heart of ASEAN, a region of more than 600 million people, Malaysia sits within one of the world’s most vibrant and diverse regions. This strategic position connects the country to a wider landscape of shared health priorities, cultural richness, economic growth, and regional collaboration. It also places Malaysia in a strong position to contribute to pharmacy leadership, innovation, and professional exchange across Southeast Asia and beyond.

In 2026, Malaysia recorded 23,125 currently practising pharmacists. Pharmacists in Malaysia work across community, hospital, industry, academia, regulation, research, and other professional settings, supporting the safe and effective use of medicines, advancing public health, and strengthening patient care. As the profession continues to evolve, one important challenge is securing fuller recognition of pharmacists’ expertise, roles, and contribution within the healthcare system. Even so, pharmacy in Malaysia is well placed to support stronger primary care, contribute to a more resilient health system, and help shape better health outcomes nationally and across the region.
